Some people use self-heal for HIV/AIDS, fever, headachedizzinessliver disease, and spasm. It is also used to kill germs (as an antiseptic), loosen phlegm (as an expectorant), and tighten and dry skin (as an astringent).

Self-heal can be applied directly to the skin for vaginal discharges and other disorders of women’s reproductive systems, as well as for wounds and bruises.

How does it work?

Self-heal contains vitamins C and K, and thiamine. It also contains chemicals called tannins that might help reduce skin swelling (inflammation) and have a drying (astringent) effect on the tissues.

Medicinal Action and Uses:

Anti-Inflammatory – It is used as an anti-inflammatory and has anti-allergic activity.

External Uses – In western medicine it is used externally for treating minor injuries, sores, burns, bruises and can also be used as a mouthwash to treat mouth ulcers.

Hepatic – in Chinese medicine the herb is mainly used for treating liver complaints, acting as a stimulant in the liver and gall bladder.

Styptic – The plant has a long history of medicinal use, and traditionally the leaves are applied to wounds to promote healing and staunch bleeding.

Dosage: Use 6-30 drops in juice or water, under the tongue or as desired. May be taken 3 times daily. Shake well.

Can be applied to the skin as needed.
